Shockpowder is the creative outlet of visionary artist Joshua Scurfield, who weaves lush sonic tapestries that carry the listener to dreamlike realms through intricate layers of guitar soundscapes, ambient tones, and melodic vocals. With "Dreaming from Elsewhere," Scurfield has compiled all the music and singles released under the Shockpowder moniker over the past few years into one cohesive full-length offering.
We begin with, "Evergreen Solace," a track that shows this is an album designed for immersive listening from front to back. A gorgeous riff makes itself present to welcome you into the sound that you will be expecting throughout this album. "Human" ups the energy even more with a driving post-rock rhythm and high-energy playing that soars among the swirling guitars.
We continue with "Flux" a tour de force of post-metal textures, layering heavy riffing with ambient passages in a truly cathartic listening experience. Standout "Numb But Fragile" is one of the most emotionally resonant tracks here, featuring a vulnerable and heart-wrenching guitar performance over a backdrop of lush, reverb-drenched texture.
"The Drowning and the Sunset" provides a much-needed moment of calm and introspection before an epic climactic finale. Meanwhile, the deceptively upbeat "Oxygen" belies a darker undercurrent that comes bursting forth in its latter stages. The penultimate track "The Ghost in Spring" has a lovely melancholic vibe, but again builds to an immense, emotionally stirring conclusion.
Closing is the epic "Europa," which is considered the pinnacle of the album, starting as a minimal, atmospheric piece before morphing through multiple movements and ultimately achieving a truly spiritual, epic peak. Joshua unleashes a masterclass in textural guitar work as the song journeys through rich atmospheres and heavy, driving passages.
From start to finish, "Dreaming from Elsewhere" sucks the listener in and whisks them to colorful vistas and inner worlds through Joshua’s meticulously layered compositions. It has quickly solidified itself as one of our favorite albums of the year and is the ideal record for immersing yourself in during these wonderful months.
